Poverty
and malnutrition are two of the major problems of Bangladesh. Fundamentally, poverty is a denial of choices and
opportunities, a violation of human dignity. It means not having enough to feed
and clothe a family, not having a school or clinic to go to; not having the
land on which to grow one’s food or a job to earn one’s living, not having
access to credit. Malnutrition has long been
recognized as a consequence of poverty. Those living in poverty suffer disproportionately from hunger
or even starvation and disease. Those
living in poverty suffer lower life expectancy.
It is widely accepted that higher rates of malnutrition will be found in areas
with chronic widespread poverty. Malnutrition is the result of marginal dietary
intake compounded by infection. In turn, marginal dietary intake is caused by
household food insecurity, lack of clean water, lack of knowledge on good
sanitation, and lack of alternative sources of income. As literacy rate in our
country is very low so the people do not understand the bad effects of
malnutrition. Poverty and malnutrition can only be stopped if only the people
are cautious. Various poverty reduction strategies are broadly categorized here based
on whether they make more of the basic human needs available or increase the disposable income needed to purchase those needs. Some basic needs, such as
improving access to education, may also help increase income. One of the main
causes for poverty and malnutrition is over-population. The population is
increasing rapidly but the resources are not enough to cope up with it. So
overpopulation should be stooped. To stop poverty and malnutrition government
should take necessary steps against it.
